Date: May 6th Tuesday
Topic/Skill: Grammar (Lower Intermediate); simple, compound, and complex sentence formation
Teacher presentation: The instructor had students answering various questions on Google docs, ask them to write 5 example sentences to the prompts. They worked on forming simple, compound, and complex sentence formation while reviewing the 5 key components of English sentence formation. The teacher would actively review the work and highlight beautiful mistakes for student-led corrections through the Google docs that the students shared with her. She would use the whiteboard if a student was struggling with a concept to change the medium of instruction.
Classroom management: The teacher made sure that students were not using word-generative software and answering sentences in complete questions. She spoke clearly and defined more complicated words, such as following their use with "in other words." The teacher made explicit corrections so students recognized their mistakes, but encouraged them to figure out what the correct answers were through their own thinking.
Materials: computer, whiteboard, picture dictionary, and Google docs.
Student participation: The students answered various questions on Google docs and wrote 5 example sentences per prompt.
Feedback provided: Actively guided students in their grammar prompts,
Lessons on teaching I learned: Clear and concise language, encourage referencing previous notes, using body language while speaking, Google docs is a great resource, knowing some linguistic elements of the students' L1 can help me explain English grammar concepts (asked teacher about this).
