Date: May 6th Tuesday

Topic/Skill: Reading (Upper Intermediate); reading informational passages about unfamiliar subject

Teacher presentation: The instructor had students share what they knew about that day's reading topic (Cinco de Mayo). Then, they all read the passage within a time limit. After that, the instructor asked all the students to get into groups and summarize the passage to each other before sharing their observations to the whole class. They also answered written questions about what they read. The teacher also fostered discussions on American cultural fusions.

Classroom management: The teacher made sure that students' spoken answers didn't go on for too long. At the beginning of the discussion, the instructor didn't let students who had a cultural background related to Cinco de Mayo to contribute until several students outside those cultures contributed.

Materials: computer, Google docs, Google search.

Student participation: The students read a passage and summarized it. They also shared elements of their own culture that are similar to Cinco de Mayo celebrations. Students answered questions before and after reading the passage.

Feedback provided: Guiding students if they didn't understand one of the written questions, taking note of what the groups were discussing.

Lessons on teaching I learned: Prepositions and articles are the last thing L2 English learners master, being aware of heavy and light discussion contributors, usefulness of utilizing comparative takes during cultural lessons, supplement reading practice with written questions and dialogue.
