Topic/Skill: Responding to Academic Feedback & Follow-Up Conversations
Feedback Provided to the Tutee:
In today’s session, Nejoud and I tackled one of grad school’s sneakiest stressors: responding to academic feedback in real time. Whether it’s a professor’s critical comment during office hours or a classmate’s question after a presentation, these moments can feel like pop quizzes in emotional regulation and linguistic finesse.
We reviewed how to buy time with phrases like:
“That’s a great point, I hadn’t considered that angle.”
“Let me think about that for a second…”
“I’ll need to explore that more, but off the top of my head…”
Nejoud practiced responding to spontaneous follow-ups with poise, not panic. We role-played a mini Q&A session where I asked layered, slightly unexpected questions about her research topic. She focused on keeping her tone calm and her structure clear, even when she wasn’t totally sure of the answer.
We also revisited the idea of “academic vulnerability” and the fact that not knowing something isn’t a failure, it’s part of the process. Framing responses as open-ended or reflective is often more appropriate than trying to give a perfect answer.
Homework:
Nejoud will write out 2 examples of academic feedback she’s received in the past; one that went well, one that felt awkward. We’ll use them next session to strategize how she could respond more effectively next time.
Tutoring Takeaway:
This session reminded me that fluency isn’t just about grammar, it’s about grace under pressure. Nejoud is building that grace by internalizing the language of flexibility, humility, and curiosity. Every session, she sounds more like the confident scholar she already is on paper.
