Venus TS #9
Date/Time: June 12th, Thursday at 1:00 PM
Location: Kellogg Building
Topic/Skill: Understanding Regional Accents ; The Midwest
Feedback provided to the tutee:
In this session, Thakshila and I took a trip to the heartland as we explored the sounds of the Midwestern accent. We focused on the General American variety often associated with newscasters (a.k.a. “non-accent accents”) as well as some strong regional features from states like Minnesota, Wisconsin, and parts of Illinois.
We covered hallmark traits like the flat a in “bag,” the rounded o in “boat,” and the nasal intonation that sneaks into longer phrases. Thakshila noticed how the Midwestern “nice” is more than a stereotype, there’s a soft, sing-songy politeness embedded into the intonation that makes even disagreement sound friendly. We also compared how vowels shift depending on whether you’re in the Great Lakes region or venturing into “Fargo” territory.
For listening practice, we used short interview clips and a few pop culture samples to identify recurring features and build up her ear for vowel nuance. Thakshila also practiced mimicking phrases, focusing on rhythm and intonation.
Homework:
Thakshila will watch and listen to "The Middle" a show based out of the Midwest. She’ll jot down three speech patterns or phrases that stand out to her and practice repeating them aloud, paying attention to vowel shape and rhythm. This will also help build her schema of things such as block parties, and Midwestern traditions.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned:
This session was a great reminder that so-called “neutral” American English isn’t neutral at all, it’s a rich blend of subtle quirks and social cues. Thakshila’s curiosity helped push our analysis beyond “how it sounds” to “why it sounds that way.” She’s developing a great radar for the intersection of accent, personality, and place.
