Venus TS #16

 Date/Time: Tuesday, July 8th, at 1:30 pm

Location: Dirac Library
Topic/Skill: Speaking Confidence, Cultural Reflection, and Modal Verbs in Social Contexts

Feedback provided to the tutee:

In today’s session, Wei and I focused on communication strategies around feeling self-conscious, particularly in academic and social environments. We opened with a warm-up discussion about her homework; a verbal reflection on the TED-Ed video Inside the Mind of a Master Procrastinator. Wei shared thoughtful insights on the “Panic Monster” and reflected on her own decision-making tendencies. She identified with the balance between rational planning and last-minute motivation, which led to a deeper conversation about time management strategies.

We then explored a short reading on group work and accountability cycles. This text introduced key vocabulary, including self-conscious, judged, support, and accountability, all in the context of common classroom challenges. Wei connected strongly to the idea of “perfection vs. progress” and shared that while she prefers working alone, she sees value in structured group check-ins that help reduce stress.

To build fluency and reinforce grammar in context, we practiced using modal verbs for reflection and advice. Wei responded to real-world academic situations, such as forgetting to ask a question in class or hesitating to join a study group. She generated original sentences like, “I shouldn’t have worried so much; the professor was very kind,” and, “I would have asked for help if I wasn’t afraid of being judged.” Her use of modals showed strong awareness of tone, mood, and social nuance in English.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned:

This session reinforced how useful it is to anchor grammar and vocabulary in real emotional experiences, especially those that international students often encounter but don’t always get to talk about openly. By blending a reflective theme (self-consciousness) with grammar practice (modals) and cultural insight (accountability culture in U.S. classrooms), the session became both a language lesson and a confidence-building space. I was reminded that vulnerability and language learning go hand in hand, and that creating space to explore that vulnerability can unlock more authentic communication.
